On October 10-11, 2017, the 5th Azerbaijan Congress of Physiologists dedicated to the 50th anniversary of Garayev Institute of Physiology of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences was held in Baku.
The event was attended by the prominent scientists from foreign countries. In particular, Sergey Konstantinovich Sudakov – Sc.D. in Medicine, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), Director of Anokhin Institute of Normal Physiology of the RAS; David Nadareishvili – Sc.D. in Biology, Director of Ivane Beritashvili Center Of Experimental Biomedicine of Georgia; Prof. Z. Zorina – Sc.D. in Biology, Head of the Laboratory of Physiology and Genetics of Behavior, Faculty of Biology, Moscow State University; A.N. Inozemtsev – Sc.D. in Biology, Head of the Laboratory of Evolution of Memory Mechanisms, Faculty of Biology, Moscow State University et al. Academician Akif Alizadeh – President of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), Academician Ibrahim Guliyev – vice-president of the ANAS, Academician Akhliman Amiraslanov – Academician-Secretary of the Division of Biological and Medical Sciences (DBMS) of the ANAS attended the opening ceremony of the congress.
The event held by organization of ANAS Institute of Physiology after A.Garayev and the Society of Physiologists of Azerbaijan is devoted to the theme “Physiology and human health”.
At the event organized at the Central Scientific Library, ANAS President, Akif Alizadeh noted that, the 5th Congress of Physiologists of Azerbaijan is dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Institute of Physiology. In the event, along with physiologists working in academic structures and at the departments of universities of the republic, well-known scientists and young researchers in the field of physiology from Russia, Georgia, Belarus and Iran also take part.
Academician stressed that, the formation of the school of physiology in Azerbaijan began after the establishment of the Baku State University (BSU) in 1919.
The 1st Department of Physiology of the BSU Medical Faculty was established under the supervision of student of the prominent Russian physiologist I.Pavlov by T.Sitovich. In 1930-1940, Department of Physiology was established at the Azerbaijan Medical Institute, Azerbaijan Pedagogical University, first experimental physiological laboratory – the first experimental physiological laboratory – the Institute of Spa Treatment and Research Institute of Experimental Medicine.
The Institute of Physiology was established by the decision of the Council of Ministers of the USSR and the Government of Azerbaijan on the basis of the physiology sector operating under the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan. The first director of the Institute, Academician Abdulla Garayev, was undeniable in the creation and formation of this scientific institution.
Congratulating the staff of the institute on the anniversary, Academician Akif Alizadeh wished successes to the participants of the congress.
Then, Director of the Institute of Physiology, the president of the Society of Physiologists of Azerbaijan, doctor of biological sciences, Professor Ulduz Hashimova delivered a paper on “Physiological science in Azerbaijan: the history of creation, current state and development prospects”. Speaking about the creation and development of physiology in Azerbaijan, the scientist noted that the activity of the Institute of Physiology, created in 1968 on the initiative of the outstanding physiologist-scientist Academician Abdulla Garayev, is especially noteworthy.
U.Hashimova said that, the structure she headed is a scientific center that coordinates physiological research in the country, focuses on research in the field of gerontology, ecology and morphology and neurophysiology.
Speaking at the event, Academician-Secretary of the Department of Biological and Medical Sciences of ANAS, Academician Ahliman Amiraslanov expressed his confidence that the congress will create opportunities for mutual understanding on contemporary problems of physiology and future joint research. Noting that, the main theme of the congress is “Physiology and human health”, the academician added that academic physiology is the theory of medicine.
A.Amiraslanov expressed confidence that the institute will achieve further success in studying the physiological and molecular genetic basis of longevity, physiological and toxicological effects of environmental factors, as well as in other priority areas.
The head of the department congratulated the staff of the Institute of Physiology on the 50th anniversary and wished successes to the participants of the event.
Then, Director of the Scientific Research Institute of Normal Physiology after P.K.Anokhin, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor Sergei Sudakov, Director of the Center of Experimental Biology after Beritashvili, D.K.Nadareishvili, Doctor of Biological sciences, etc.
After the break the congress continued its work in the plenary sessions on sections.
The Congress lasted until 11 October.
